Code of Ethics
The Club Barbet Canada has established this Code of Ethics in an effort to preserve and protect the future of the Barbet. The Club encourages it’s breeder and owner members to adhere to the high standards as set forth in this Code of Ethics.
All members shall agree to abide by this Code of Ethics upon signing their membership application and yearly membership renewal.
Club Barbet Canada believes that every member is entitled to membership free from harassment. Club Barbet Canada will make every reasonable effort to ensure that no member is subjected to harassment. Any complaint alleging to contravention of this Code shall be submitted in writing to the secretary of the Club Barbet Canada and the matter will be dealt with according to the process as outlined in the Club By-laws.
Section 1 – Code of ethics for all members
1.1 Abide by the regulations of the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) as well as the Constitution and By-laws of the Club Barbet Canada.
1.2 Promote the best interests and welfare of the breed and the Club Barbet Canada.
1.3 Exhibit good sportsmanship and exemplary attitudes at all times.
1.4 Provide every dog with humane living quarters, veterinary care, proper nutrition, grooming, training, socialization and exercise.
1.5 Promote the cause of responsible dog ownership by personal example and by providing assistance and education geared toward responsible dog breeding and ownership.
1.6 All owners are encouraged to provide health information about their dogs to the Club Barbet Canada’s info@clubbarbetcanada.com.
Section 2 – Breeding
Club Barbet Canada breeder members commit to educating themselves about their dogs pedigrees and the health of the dogs they are planning to breed. Conscientious effort will be made to reduce the incidence of inheritable diseases. Experienced breeder members are encouraged to mentor new breeder members.
Breeding will be in accordance with the following current Club Barbet Canada Breeder’s Guidelines:
2.1 Breed Only:
2.1.1 Purebred Barbets, CKC registered and/or dogs with foreign registrations that are recognized by the CKC.
2.1.2 Healthy dogs.
2.1.3 Certified clear of hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia by a recognized institution e.g. OVC, OFA, other recognized international organisms.
2.1.4 Certified clear of hereditary eye diseases by a veterinary ophthalmologist before the initial breeding. Annual re-certification is recommended.
2.1.5 Dogs characteristic of the breed standard with good conformation and of sound temperament.
2.1.6 Dogs whose character is in keeping with the breed standard, sociable with people and dogs. Attention will be paid to the breed’s origin and purpose. Effort will be made to maintain the characteristics of a retriever and water dog that are inherent to the Barbet.
2.1.7 Females over the age of 18 months and no more than 8 years. Males should be 18 months or over. Collected semen should not be used until the male it was collected from has reached 18 months of age and obtained the recommended health clearances.
2.2 Litters for any female should be suitably spaced with the female’s health and well-being given top priority.
2.3 Keep precise breeding records, making sure that litter applications are sent as soon as possible to the CKC or governing body of the country in which the member resides. Each and every pup (live or not) reported in these litter applications are to be fully registered and accounted for.
Section 3 – Selling
3.1 Conscientiously plan the placement of all Barbets.
3.1.1 No dogs will knowingly be sold to pet dealers, pet wholesalers, pet brokers, or puppy mills, singly or in litter lots.
3.1.2 No dogs will be offered as a raffle or contest prizes or for other types of giveaways.
3.1.3 No dogs will knowingly be sold to any person who would act as a third party to the transactions referred to in 3.1.1 or 3.1.2.
3.2 All advertising and claims regarding the sale of Barbets will be of an honest forthright nature.
3.3 Breeders will take back or assist in the relocation of any dog that they produce for the entire lifetime of the dog.
3.4 Breeders will make themselves available to the buyer to answer questions. If they are unable to answer specific questions they will make every effort to seek out the information for the buyer.
3.5 At the time of sale, supply the buyer with:
3.5.1 One or more of the following: A CKC “Non-Breeding Agreement” (CKC form 201) for the sale of pet dogs that should not reproduce, a signed co-ownership and/or private contract for all dogs sold from their kennel.
3.5.2 An accurate three-generation pedigree.
3.5.3 Written instructions of feeding, health care, training, grooming, etc.
3.5.4 A health book issued by a veterinarian indicating date of examination, any vaccinations and/or medication given.
3.5.5 A written health guarantee.
3.5.6 New owners who are not already members of the Club will be given a membership form, a copy of the Code of Ethics and instructions on how to become a member of Club Barbet Canada.
3.6 All health and/or genetic tests done on the sire and dam should be made available for buyers to see.
3.7 Arrange to have each Barbet adequately identified (tattoo, microchip or any other method approved by the Club delivering the registration certificate).
3.8 Dogs will not leave the breeder’s premises before the age of 8 weeks.
